The Problem...

Techshot Director, Will Prowse’s cricketing journey started as a 6 year old in Eidsvold in country Queensland. From those days until now, Will has played the game for nearly 25 years, most recently for Wynnum Cricket Club in Brisbane, where he was an opening batsman for 12 seasons in their 1st grade side, and has also coached and has been coached batting by some elite former players.

From a coaches perspective, one of the hardest skills for a young batsman to learn is to hit the ball late and keep their shape post contact. The late striking position and swing pattern is completely un-natural, and is why many young players swing the bat like a baseballer or golfer. To learn the position requires a great deal of repetition. Because it’s so un-nature is also why elite players can struggle with hitting late when they are out of form. Playing the ball late requires the batter to allow the ball to come to them, to not anticipate the bowling, and to have precise footwork to ensure their body is in a stable position prior to contact, and they are giving themselves access to the ball to allow them to keep their shape post contact.

Further compounding the issue, is that cricketers generally train on synthetic wickets offering little variable movement. Players tend to become over confident and start making contact with the ball in front of their pad. Variable movement on game day can result in poor performances due to imperfect practice.

  • The late striking position is un-natural and hard to learn
  • Both beginners and elite players can struggle to hit the ball late and keep their shape post contact
  • Synthetic wickets give players too much confidence and they can start striking the ball in front of their pad

The Concept

Will spent months watching footage of the modern day great players to try to combat faults in his own game by trying to replicating these players. Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Smith, AB De Villiers to name a few. One thing that he picked up on when watching them from the side on position, is that when they all played an impressive defensive shot, straight drive or backfoot punch, there was one constant feature. They all had the same elbow position upon contact with the ball. This was the catalyst for the Techshot Batting Trainer concept. The idea of restricting movement in order to train muscle memory has never before been implemented in cricket. From this early stage, Will developed the first Batting Trainer with a local Brisbane bootmaker. From there he acquired the services of Brisbane Outdoor Gear, a local backpack manufacture to further refine and enhance the design to what we have launched today.

The Solution

TECHSHOT Batting Trainer teaches the late striking position by taking care of the front elbow position, and allowing the batter to instead focus on their footwork and watching the ball correctly. Techshot encourages the batter to position their body in a stable position for maximum shot efficiency. Through more effective body positioning and a high elbow, the batter will start to hit the ball straighter, and hit less balls in the air. Through repetitive use, Techshot converts the techniques learnt to muscle memory.
